How to Choose the Right Family Photographer for You
With so many family photographers out there, how do you know which one is the one? It’s a bit like dating—you want someone who gets you, makes you feel comfortable, and delivers exactly what you’re looking for.
Choosing a professional family photographer is a personal decision, but there are definitely a few key things to consider before you book. So, grab a cuppa (or something stronger—I won’t judge!), and let’s dive into my top tips.
1. Love Their Style (Seriously, LOVE It!)
Before you book a photographer, make sure their style speaks to you. Do you adore natural, relaxed family photos or are you after something more posed and studio-based? If you love bright and airy images, don’t hire a photographer whose portfolio is all about dark and moody vibes.
Think of it this way—you wouldn’t ask a baker who specializes in wedding cakes to make a sourdough loaf, right? Photographers, like bakers, have their own signature style. So, find one whose work makes your heart skip a beat.
(P.S. If natural, connection-filled photos are your thing, you might just love my work—check out my newborn and familygalleries!)
2. Location, Location, Location
Do you want your session at home, in a beautiful outdoor spot, or in a studio? Also, think about how far you’re willing to travel. If you’ve just had a baby, you might prefer a photographer who offers at-home newborn sessions—because let’s be real, getting out of the house with a newborn is an Olympic-level challenge.
I’m based in Stafford and regularly photograph families across Staffordshire, Cheshire, and Shropshire—but some families travel even further to book with me. If you love a photographer’s work enough, a little road trip might just be worth it!
3. Quality Matters
You don’t need to be a photography expert to spot quality work. Look closely at the images—do they capture emotion? Are the details sharp? Does the editing feel timeless, or is it something you might cringe at in five years?
A skilled family photographer knows how to use light, composition, and storytelling to create images that don’t just show what your family looks like but make you feel something.
4. The Experience (Because It Should Be Stress-Free!)
From your first enquiry to the final gallery delivery, a great photographer will make the entire experience smooth and enjoyable. Do they have helpful guides? Do they answer your questions quickly? Do they seem like someone you’d actually enjoy spending time with?
A photographer’s job isn’t just to take pictures—it’s to make you feel relaxed, comfortable, and confident in front of the camera. Because let’s face it, most of us aren’t models, and having a camera pointed at you can feel a bit intimidating.
5. Pricing—What’s the Real Cost?
Photography is an investment, so make sure you understand what’s included. Do they charge a session fee plus extra for images? Do they offer prints and albums?
Cheap photographers exist, but ask yourself—what corners are they cutting? Are they using professional equipment? Do they have backup gear? Are they experienced in working with children (a skill in itself!)?
You don’t have to spend a fortune, but choose the best you can afford. These are the photos you’ll look back on for years to come.
Final Tip: Don’t Ask for a Different Style!
One last thing—if you love a photographer’s work, book them for that work. Don’t ask them to recreate someone else’s style. Every photographer has a unique way of seeing the world, and you should be completely in love with their images before hiring them.
