“Who is that lady with a camera?”
Here I am, determined to share a bit about myself. “who am I?” I am a mother, a wife, and a grandmother, or as my grandson affectionately calls me, “Franma.” I have an inclination for exploring charity shops and am particularly drawn to anything with a boho theme (must be my inner hippie). There’s something fascinating about finding unique pieces and giving them a new life.
When the need to escape arises, I find comfort in my trusty camper van, lovingly named Bob the bus. These adventures remind me of the simple beauty of the world. Being in nature has a very settling feeling on the soul. People-watching has become a guilty pleasure of mine, as I observe strangers and wonder about their stories, their journeys, and the experiences that have shaped them.
Let’s not forget my love for a good sea chanty and folk music. It’s not the whaling sounds from the 60s and 70s that captivate me, but rather the indie folk genre that speaks to my soul. We have also recently undertaken an allotment in our bid for more sustainable and tasty food and are looking forward to this year’s harvest. In fact, my sister finds it amusing to compare my husband and me to the characters from “The Good Life,” and I must admit, I do own a pair of dungarees. Talking of the groovy 70’s, when disco was the boss of the dance floors and polyester suits were hotter than hot, I was a little disco diva myself! Oh, those disco balls sparkled like magic, and yours truly, just a small 7-year-old, ruled the dance floor in our humble abode. Strictly Come Dancing? Pfft, they had nothing on me in my prime! And guess what? Even today, you can catch me busting some groovy moves on the dance floor. Though, I must confess, I blame the red wine for my enthusiastic twists and turns. Cheers to the good ol’ days!
Now, let’s dive deeper into the depths of my being. I am a combination of loud and quiet, introverted and extroverted, light hearted and deep. These complexities are what make me uniquely human. Throughout my life, my roles as a daughter, a sister, a mother, a wife, and a grandmother have shaped me and fostered a deep connection to the wonders of the human spirit, the essence of our souls.
It is this connection, along with my passion for history and human connections, that led me to become a photographer. When you think about it, a family photograph is so much more than just a snapshot. It is a tangible piece of history that will forever resonate with the hearts of future generations, allowing them to witness and cherish the beautiful moments and treasured memories we have woven together, capturing the essence of who we are and the connections we share.
As we look back at old family photographs, especially those from generations past, we are transported to a time when portraits were captured in a more traditional and significant manner. The accessibility of photography was limited, and these images hold a special place in our hearts. We observe these photos and find ourselves wondering about the lives our relatives led before they became parents. We ponder their dreams, their thoughts, and the stories that shaped their very existence.
Now, imagine the power of capturing your own family in a more relaxed and authentic environment. A window into your world, your true selves shining through for future generations to witness. It is a profound and beautiful gift of time, a connection that transcends generations and offers a glimpse into the tapestry of your family’s story.
So, as I share these thoughts and passions with you, I hope you can sense the depth of my commitment. Through my passion and vision, I strive to capture the raw emotions, the genuine connections, and the true essence of what it means to be a family. It is an honour and a privilege to be a part of this journey, preserving the real stuff that makes us human and the stories that bind us together.
